The shinpad is a protective shield that is worn in front of the shins to protect from a large range of injuries. Shinpads were invented in Nottingham in the late 19th Century, as hacking of shins, tripping and stamping were all allowed in Football. Nottingham Forest became the first team to wear shin pads. Now days shinpads are not just worn buy footballers but a lot of team sports. Rugby, Hockey, ice hockey players, boxers and even cricket players see the necessity of protecting their shins.
Now there are stricter rules on fouling some people question the need for shin pads, especially during training session. With the speed and intensity of the modern game shin pads are becoming even more important, with players picking up a lot of injuries from poorly timed tackles.
The tibia, the larger of the bones in the lower leg, is largely exposed as it lies directly under skin with little padding as there is no muscle surrounding it, like there is with other large bones. This means injuries to the shin are very common and can be very painful due to the thin membrane high in pain receptors that covers all bones. Due to this shinpads are now compulsory in a lot of competitive sports and schools.
Technology behind shinpads has improved massively since their introduction back in the late 19th century. Modern shinpads are lighter, more flexible and more suitable at absorbing impact than ever before. Today shinpads are designed to maximize protection and comfort but being as inconspicuous as possible in order not to affect the players’ performance. Some shinpads are so light and comfortable you won’t even know you are wearing them!
